09-09: Blessed Assurance

1 John 2:3-6 New International Version (NIV)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Notes:

1 - Assurance comes by walking in the light (vs 3)

2 - Walking in the darkness is living a lie (vs 4)

3 - The motivation of love (vs 5, 6)

Expanded translation

(3) And in this we know experientially that we have come to know Him experientially and are in that state at present, if we are continually having a watchful care over His precepts. (4) He who keeps on saying, I have come to know Him experientially and as a present result am in that state, and His precepts is not continually guarding with great care, is a liar, and in this one the truth is not in. (5) But whoever habitually is with great care watching over His Word, truly, in this one the love of God has been brought to its completion, with the present result that it is in a state of completion. In this we have an experiential knowledge that in Him we are. (6) He who is constantly saying that he as a habit of life is living in close fellowship with and dependence upon Him, is morally obligated just as that One conducted Himself, also himself in the manner spoken of to be conducting himself.
