Isaiah 53:7-12

[7] He was oppressed and He was afflicted,

Yet He did not open His mouth;

Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,

And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,

So He did not open His mouth.

[8] By oppression and judgment He was taken away;

And as for His generation, who considered

That He was cut off out of the land of the living

For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?

[9] His grave was assigned with wicked men,

Yet He was with a rich man in His death,

Because He had done no violence,

Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

[10] But the Lord was pleased

To crush Him, putting Him to grief;

If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,

He will see His offspring,

He will prolong His days,

And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

[11] As a result of the anguish of His soul,

He will see it and be satisfied;

By His knowledge the Righteous One,

My Servant, will justify the many,

As He will bear their iniquities.

[12] Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,

And He will divide the booty with the strong;

Because He poured out Himself to death,

And was numbered with the transgressors;

Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,

And interceded for the transgressors.

The Suffering Saviour - Week 2

Scripture: Isaiah 53:7-12

JESUS was speaking in Luke 22:37

“For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me. ‘And He was numbered with transgressors’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.”

1. The Silence of the Servant: v. 7

“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he opened not His mouth.”

His silence was a picture of His submission to the will of His Father. “For I have come down from Heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who has sent Me” (John 6:38).

2. The Separation of the Servant: v. 8

“Who considered that He was cut off from the land of the living for the transgression of My people, to whom the stroke was due.”

A. What is the Atonement?

B. What is Appeasement?

“O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken. Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”

3. The Sepulture of the Servant: v. 9

“And His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death.”

“But coming to Jesus when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.” (John 19:33)

4. The Sovereign Hand Upon Servant: v. 10

“But the (Sovereign) Lord desired (pleased) to crush Himself as a guilt offering.”

It is clear that it was the sovereign hand of God that inflicted the sins of the world upon Christ, which was the ultimate cause of His suffering.

“Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has (now) set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2).

5. The Servant’s Success: v. 10-11

“He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul He will see it and be satisfied…My Servant will justify MANY.”

1. He will see His offspring.

2. He will fulfill the good pleasure of the Lord.

3. He will justify many.

4. He will intercede.

6. The Servant’s Supremacy: v. 12 (Acts 1:9-11)

  1. The Ascension marked the COMPLETION of Christ’s earthly work of redemption. “I glorified You on the earth having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4).

  2. The Ascension signaled our Lord’s sending the HOLY SPIRIT. “It is to your advantage that I leave so the Comforter will come” (John 14:1-6,16-18; 13:13).

  3. The Ascension marked the start of Jesus preparing our eternal HOME. “For I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am there you may be also” (John 14:1-3).
