Colossians 1:20-24

[20] and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

[21] And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, [22] yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— [23] if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.

[24] Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.

Notes:

Statement of Fact: Because of the supremacy of Christ, He is the only one capable and worthy to make reconciliation for sinners to God (1:19).

Why is Reconciliation necessary?

“Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

“For if by the transgression of the one (Adam), death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness (salvation) will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17).

“For as through one man’s disobedience (Adam) the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19).

1. The Meaning of Reconciliation: 1:20-21

“And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in Heaven.”

2. The Evidence of Reconciliation: 1:23

“If indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven and of which I, Paul was made a minister.”

3. The Goal of Reconciliation: 1:22

And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body (human body) through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach.”

4. The Joy of Reconciliation: 1:24

“Now I rejoice in my suffering.”
