John 2:1-11

Miracle at Cana

[1] On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; [2] and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. [3] When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” [4] And Jesus *said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” [5] His mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” [6] Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. [7] Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. [8] And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. [9] When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, [10] and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” [11] This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

[12] After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

Notes:

Subject: This is a wonderful and special miracle of Jesus. It was His first miracle and it was at a time of festivity, laughter and happiness. This miracle is so unique that no one has ever dared duplicate it or imitate it. It is unique only to Jesus.

There are seven miracles in the gospel of John that illustrate the personhood of Jesus. All seven miracles affirmed His deity.

1. The Vessels:

“Fill The Water pots with water.”

John explained that the vessels were water pots about 20-30 gal. each “for the purification of the Jews”.

Truth: We are God’s vessels.

2. The Water:

”So they filled them to the brim” (v. 7).

Water in Scripture is a symbol of cleansing through the Word of God.

“Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” (John 15:3)

Truth: We are God’s vessels to be filled with His Word.

3. The Wine:

"“Draw out some of the water and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him” (v. 8)

As the servants carried the water to the headwaiter it was transformed from water to wine.

“Every man serves the good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine, but you have save the best or the good wine for last” (10).

Truth: We are rejoicing in Christ!

4. The Wedding:

“The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain, a banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, and refined, aged wine…. He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces…This is the Lord for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation” (Isaiah 25:6-9).

"Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. "And he said to me, "These are true words of God." (Revelation 19:7-9)

Truth: We will join Him in Heaven forever.

5. The Waiting:

While Christians around the world wait for His coming, God extends this invitation to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

The first miracle and the last invitation of the Bible are about the wedding between the Christ and His Bride.

“The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let the one who hears say, Come. And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes to take of the water of life without cost.” (Revelation 22:17)

Truth: We are waiting for His return.
