Luke 9:28-36

[28] About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. [29] And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white. [30] Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus. [31] They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

[32] Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him. [33] As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

[34] While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. [35] And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!”

[36] After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen.

Notes:

*Notes are slides used on Sunday morning made available for your personal notes and study.

1. What Was the Transfiguration of     Jesus?

Change:

“As He prayed the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming”.

Matthew and Mark use “transfigured.” In Greek the word is metamorphoo to change the form and coupled with the original word morphe meaning the outer appearance.

Who will transform the body into conformity with the body of His glory. (Philippians 3:21)

Transform means inward change.

Conformity refers to the outward change of appearance.

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. (1 John 3:2)

2. What Was the Significance at That Time?

2 Peter 1.16-18

For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”

For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased.”

“And we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.”

3. What Are the Final Takeaways:

1. Prayer is Enriching:

“While He prayed.”

2. Fellowship Is Eternal:

“They were speaking of His departure.”

Moses (Representing the Law) died.

Elijah (Representing the Prophets) was translated into Heaven.

Both talked with Him about Heavenly things.

If you then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)

3. Christ-Centered Loyalty is Essential:

“This is My Son.”

And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah—not realizing what he was saying.

Heaven’s rebuke:

1. A cloud overshadowed them—they disappeared!

2. They were afraid entering the cloud—God’s presence is awesome.

3. “Then a voice came” Only what God says is important.

4. “Listen to Him.”

5. “Jesus was found alone.”

4. Listening to Christ’s Word is Empowering:

“This is My Son—Listen to Him.”

Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea and from the north even to the east; they will roam about to seek the word of the Lord, but they will not find it (Amos 8:11-12)
