Matthew 21:1-11

The Triumphal Entry

[1] As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples, [2] saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to Me. [3] If anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

[4] This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

[5] “Say to the Daughter of Zion,

‘See, your King comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

[6] So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. [7] They brought the donkey and the colt and laid their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.

[8] A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

[9] The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest!”

[10] When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

[11] The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Notes:

*Notes are slides used on Sunday morning made available for your personal notes and study.

Introduction: The time period from this point on is less than a few days left in the life of Christ. Up until this point Jesus had refused to let people publically acknowledge Him as the Messiah. Now He openly allowed the crowds to honor Him with this symbolic declaration. This entry has great significance to the revelation of who Jesus is. Jesus often said, “My time has not yet come.” Now the time for His death was near.

1. The Historical Declaration: Symbolism of the Triumphal Entry and It’s Significance

1. The Colt

2. The Context

3. David’s Mule

“So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. And Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” (1 Kings 1:38-40)

2. The Triumphal Revelation: Jesus is the Messiah!

Jesus sent two disciples into Jerusalem to get the colt. (Mark 11:1)

“Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation is coming; Behold His reward is with Him, and His compensation before Him.” (Isaiah 62:11)

The crowd cut down palm branches to show honor to the Messiah-King. “Hosanna to the Son of David” (Mark 11:1-10)

3. The Believer’s Triumphal Application: Victory in Christ!

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.

For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;

To the one an aroma from death to death and to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? (2 Corinthians 2:14-17)

  • Titus defeated Jerusalem in 70 AD and was awarded a triumph in 81 AD.

4. Putting It All Together

1.   We see Jesus as He really is: Meek not majestic, bringing mercy and salvation. He will fight a spiritual battle in Jerusalem on our behalf. (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8)

2.   We solicit Jesus for His blessing: “Hosanna” is “Save us we pray” (Psalms 118:20-25)

3.   We study Jesus: As He came to Jerusalem the city was “moved” because of Him (Matthew 21:10)
