John 6:1-14
The Feeding of the Five Thousand
(Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17)
[1] After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias). [2] A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick. [3] Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.
[4] Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near. [5] When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” [6] But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
[7] Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”
[8] One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, [9] “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
[10] “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
[11] Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
[12] And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”
[13] So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
[14] When the people saw the sign that Jesus had performed, they began to say, “Truly this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Man’s Answers to Spiritual Matters:
1. Avoid it: “Send the crowds away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” (Mark 6:36; Matthew 14:15).
2. Calculate it: Human reason is not faith but so to prove it impossible. “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to have a little (6:7; about 200 days of wages).
3. Doubt it: Offered a solution that they know wouldn’t work: Andrew brought a young boy to Jesus who willingly offered his lunch to Jesus. The disciples said, “What are these among so many?
4. Manipulate it: The crowd, once fed, began to whisper, “Let’s make Him king!” Why? Because He fed them, gave them what they needed and they saw how He would benefit them 6:15).
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26)
Jesus Taught God’s ways:
1. Jesus always knows what He will do.
2. Jesus Taught from the things most obvious.
3. He gave thanks—He multiplied their blessings.
4. God uses people to carry out His mission. The bread passed through the hands of the disciples making them part of the Lord’s miracle.
5. Jesus is the All Sufficient One who meets us at our point of need.
6. “Gather up” what was left so nothing is lost.
7. Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life to a spiritually starving world (John 8:35).
1. Jesus is the Source of all spiritual truth and sustenance, which gives eternal life.
2. Bread is a staple for our needs. Jesus was saying that He is Essential for true life.
3. Jesus, as the Bread of Life, is the answer to man’s Hunger. Man’s hunger is to be fulfilled, happy and to live forever.
