Luke 17:11-19

Ten Lepers Cleansed

[11] While He was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria and Galilee. [12] As He entered a village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him; [13] and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” [14] When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. [15] Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, [16] and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. [17] Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? [18] Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” [19] And He said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has made you well.”

Notes:

1.   The Unlikely Recipients: (v. 12)

It is not who we would have chosen.

2.   The Universal Request: “Have Mercy” a prayer.

“Who is a God like unto You that pardons iniquity…who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy” (Micah 7:18).

3.   The Unusual Response: “Turned” (v.15).

Jesus said, “Go show before the healing.” As they went the numbness began to leave and they noticed feeling in the body again.

4. The Unique Rebuke: Jesus asked Three Questions to Teach the Lesson:

A.   First Question: “Were there not ten cleansed?”.

B.   Second Question: “But the nine—where are they?

C.  Third Question: “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?

         Reasons for Ingratitude:

1.    It was their right to be healed.

2.    Christ can wait.

3.    Indifference.

4. Got what they wanted.

5. They were willing to trade the short-term benefits for the long term VALUE.

6. They were more interested in the BLESSING than they were the lesson.

5. The Ultimate Redemption:

He returned and received an additional blessing—Salvation!

Closing Thoughts:

  • It was not the fault of the message of grace from Christ.

  • It was not the fault of Christ, the messenger, who showed mercy.

  • It was the manner in which it was received. They did not believe. They shunned any willingness to come to true saving faith
