Isaiah 53:1-6
[1] Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
[2] For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
[3] He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
[4] Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
[5] But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
[6] All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.

“Tender plant” refers to His personality
“For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot.”.
1. Christ was an ordinary man. “Nothing in his appearance that we should desire him” .
2. Christ had no personal attraction. “No beauty that would attract us to him.”
3. Christ was not what they expected. “A man of sorrows acquainted with grief”.
“Root out of dry ground” refers to life bursting out of a time of grave difficulty.
1. Economically: Israel was a country considered as the poorest of the poor.
2. Politically: The nation was under the heavy hand of Rome’s suppressive rule.
3. Spiritually: The Pharisees were the example of restriction, bondage and legalism!
4. Socially: Limited transportation, communication and education was confined the family.
2. The REJECTION of the World: 53:3-4
“He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows acquainted with grief. And we hid our faces from him. He was despised and we did not esteem Him” (v. 3).
3. The REBELLION of Humanity: 53:6
“All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.”
1. Who are we?
2. What did we do?
4.The REDEMPTION: 53:4-5,
Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastisement of our well-being fell upon Him. And by His scourging we are healed. ”
“Wounded; pierced” nails and crown for our transgressions;
“Bruised, crushed” striking for our iniquities;
“Chastised” bodily and verbal attacks for our well-being;
“Stripes” scourging was for our spiritual healing.
5. The RESULTS of what He did for us:
“As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities…Therefore….Yet He Himself bore the sin of many and interceded for the transgressors.”
1. God is satisfied with Christ’s payment for you. Is it enough? It is enough!
2. The believer is fully justified as though he has never sinned at all.
3. He bore all or our sins in His body on the cross.
